TEXT: MICAH 4:1-7
MEMORY VERSE: “But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.” Micah 4:1
It is not improbable that Isaiah and Micah quoted an older prophecy, which in its fullness, is yet to be fulfilled. In the millennial age, Israel in her restored beauty, will be the centre of a renovated world. That restoration will bring great glory to God and blessing to mankind (Rom. 11:15). The time centre of unity is not to be found in creeds or systems, but in the impulse of a common desire after God and common worship. When men have found their unity in God, they will renounce war; and the home-life will become the preservative of society (Mic.4:4). Micah 4:6-7 foretell the gathering of Israel to their own land. Babylon probably stands not only for the literal nation by which the Jews were carried into captivity, but for all of the Gentile nations that have afflicted the Chosen People. Notice that God’s deliverances discover and help us in the midst of our direct affliction.
LESSONS
- The mountain of the Lord’s house… shall be exalted above the hills: This speaks of the ultimate exaltation of Jerusalem, the City of Zion, in the Lord’s ultimate restoration. This will be fulfilled completely in the Millennium, when the peoples shall flow to a restored and redeemed Jerusalem as the capital of the millennial earth (out of Zion the law shall go forth, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem).
- Micah 4:1-3 is repeated in Isaiah 2:1-3. Since Isaiah and Micah were contemporary prophets, it is not surprising that the same Spirit of the LORD could give these two prophets the same word, to establish and emphasize His word.
- The glorious transformation of the mountain of the Lord is especially wonderful in light of what the sinning people of God did to it: Therefore, because of you Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the temple like the bare hills of the forest (Micah 3:12).
- He shall judge between many people: During the reign of the Messiah, there will be no more war. There will still be conflicts between nations and individuals, but they will be justly and decisively resolved by the Messiah and those who reign with Him (He shall judge between the nations, and shall rebuke many people). It isn’t the reign of the Messiah itself that will change the heart of man. Citizens of earth will still need to trust in Jesus and His work on their behalf for their personal salvation during the millennium. But war and armed conflict will not be tolerated.
