Daily Manna 26 February
MEMORY VERSE: Jeremiah 2:31 – “O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?”
READ: Jeremiah 2:31-37
31. O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?
32. Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
33. Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.
34. Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents; I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
35. Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.
36. Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
37. Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head; for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

Ignorance and rebellion are twin vices that have had their toll on mankind and particularly on the children of Israel who were privileged to receive the full oracle – the word and will of God. The leaders and people of Israel had a history of turning away from God, heading for other gods and preferring friendship and fellowship of sinful nations and people around them.
Our passage today reveals the sordid spiritual state of Israel, the secret but steady sliding away from the Lord and the presumptive supposition that all was well. This generation of Israelites even believed that they were innocent and had not sinned (verse 35).
The condition of these religious sinners is not different from what is observed today in some individuals and corporate worshippers’ lives. The arrogant deadness and continuance in sinful practices and lifestyle is in our society today. The righteous prophet and the holy God did not fail to draw the attention of these backsliding sinners to the dire consequences of their actions. The Lord recounted to Israel that their preferred allies – Egypt and Assyria – would fail them and they would return in shame and great frustration.
As believers, we should not court the anger of God by rebelling against Him, His word and will. Israel sowed their precious seeds to the wind of rebellion and compromise, and reaped the whirlwind of shame, defeat and death. Let us take heed and watch over our heart’s dispositions towards the Lord and His word.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A surrendered will to God is priceless.
