ESOCS Devotional 15 May 2026 – Fulfilment of Prophetic Dark Hours
MEMORY VERSE: “And they began to accuse Him, saying, we found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.” Luke 23:2 KJV
TEXT: LUKE 23:1-16
Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
3 Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
4 So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no fault in this Man.”
5 But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”
6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9 Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
13 Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, “You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 I will therefore chastise Him and release Him”

In the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus, several Old Testament prophecies were being fulfilled. The mocking, beating and spitting that Jesus went through, (Luke 22:63, 23:35-39), fulfilled Psalms 22:7 and Isaiah 50:6). The casting of lots for His garments was in fulfillment of Psalms 22:18. Recall also that long ago in the Garden of Eden, (Genesis 15:3), God Himself prophesied a time when the Serpent would strike the heel of the offspring of the woman. However, in all these, Jesus knew that the appointed hour had come for the powers of darkness to exert their authority over Him. The hour of darkness was literally fulfilled when Jesus hung on the cross (Luke 23:44).
The whole multitude of accusers were actually a delegation from the kingdom of darkness to help actualize their unrighteous judgment (Matthew 27:1-2, John 18:28-38). As a matter of fact, unrighteous men with evil motives will always resort to slanderous accusations against those they seek to destroy, (Mark 12:13-17). But, in all, Jesus was innocent of all accusations levelled against Him. But He must die – they had determined. So, the only means by which an accusation could be successfully made against Him was through slanderous false charges.
Child of God, be wise and always at your wits end. They are those who, for the grace of God upon your life want you destroyed or even dead by all means. Jesus came to fulfil a destiny no other soul could handle. Once more, be wise in all your dealings as a child of God. Don’t give in to evil workers of iniquity.
Reflections
- What has God said concerning you? Watch out, don’t get mixed up with misguided sentiment.
Prayer
- Lord Jesus, grant me grace to hide away from my seen and unseen enemies.
