ESOCS Devotional 10 July 2026 – The Danger of Mockery and Disrespect
MEMORY VERSE: “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!’” Luke 15:17 NIV
TEXT: 2 KINGS 2:23-END
Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”
24 So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.
25 Then he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

Elisha, newly confirmed as God’s prophet after Elijah’s departure, is mocked by a group of youths as he travels to Bethel. Their jeering “Go up, you baldhead!” was more than childish teasing. It was an act of mockery and contempt toward God’s appointed servant and, by extension, toward God Himself.
In Scripture, mockery is never treated lightly, especially when it is directed at spiritual authority or sacred things. These young men were not simply being playful; they were showing disrespect to the office of the prophet and to the move of God happening through Elisha. In response, God allowed judgment to fall on them, demonstrating that dishonour has consequences.
This story is not about bears or baldness; it’s about the seriousness of our attitude toward God, His people, and His work. When we mock what God honours, we open ourselves to spiritual danger. Whether it’s through our words, online posts, or attitudes, disrespect toward God’s truth, His servants, or His presence grieves the Holy Spirit.
Our culture often celebrates sarcasm and disrespect as humour or boldness. But as believers, we are called to honour what God honours, speak with reverence, and treat others, especially those in spiritual leadership, with respect.
Let this passage serve as a warning and reminder: God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7). He sees the heart behind our words and actions.
Reflections
- Do I treat God, His Word, and His people with genuine reverence?
- Are there ways I’ve spoken or acted with mockery or dishonour?
- How can I cultivate a spirit of respect in my speech and attitude?
Action Step
Repent of any mocking attitudes toward God or others. Choose your words wisely, especially when speaking about spiritual matters. Encourage a culture of honour in your home, church, and online presence.
Prayer
- Lord, forgive me for any words or attitudes of mockery and dishonour.
- Teach me to walk in reverence, humility, and respect for you and for those you’ve appointed.
- May my heart reflect your holiness in all I do, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
