ESOCS Devotional 9 September 2026 – The Seraphims

MEMORY VERSE: “Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings, with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.” (Isa. 6: 2 KJV).

TEXT: ISAIAH 6: 1 – 7

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!”

4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 So I said:

“Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King,
The Lord of hosts.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said:

“Behold, this has touched your lips;
Your iniquity is taken away,
And your sin [b]purged.”

The seraphims hold a revered place in Christian angelology, recognized as the highest-ranking celestial beings within the angelic hierarchy. They are among the highest rank of angels, and their exalted status reflects their role as divine messengers and guardians, embodying purity and the divine presence. Seraphim symbolize purity, enlightenment, and the closest proximity to God’s throne which makes them understand the concept of divinity and worship.

These angelic beings are characterized by their six wings (Isa. 6:2), each serving a distinct purpose. One pair allows them to soar through the heavens, another pair is used to cover their faces in reverence, and the third pair shields their feet, signifying their humility in the presence of the Almighty. This unique physicality underscores their role as intermediaries between God and humanity. As intermediaries between God and humanity, the seraphim are often depicted as powerful and radiant figures, emphasizing their spiritual significance.

The seraphim’s proclamation of “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” in (Isaiah 6:3) serves as a powerful reminder of our response to God’s absolute holiness and majesty. Just as the seraphim humbly respond with unwavering devotion and praise, covering their faces with their wings, we too are called to recognize and respond to God’s holiness. Just as the seraphim worship God, we are invited to cultivate a lifestyle of praise, acknowledging God’s perfection, sovereignty, and glory. It’s as simple as recognizing His presence in our lives, expressing gratitude to Him and proclaiming who He is and what He does in our lives to others. This practice of praise not only honors God but also transforms our hearts, aligning us with His holy nature and filling us with awe and reverence.

As we navigate the challenges of existence, the Seraphim serve as beacons of hope, illuminating the path toward love, compassion, and unity. Their unwavering commitment to the greater good challenges us to reflect on our own roles as guardians in our communities. By embodying the virtues of the Seraphim, we can foster a world where kindness prevails and the divine spark within each of us shines brightly. As we grow in recognizing God’s unparalleled greatness and holiness, our lives will shine with praise, reflecting Him and proclaiming who He is and what He has done to those around us.

As we celebrate the Seraph anniversary, let us reflect on our lives and begin to cultivate a life of purity, humility, compassion and reverence for The Most High. Happy Seraph anniversary to you!!!

Challenges:

  • From the above description of the seraphims, can you truly say you are a seraph?
  • How can the seraphim’s example of praise inspire you to incorporate more gratitude and worship into your daily life?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, grant me grace to live a purity, humility, compassion and total obedience to Your Word in Jesus Name.
