A State High Court in Port Harcourt has adjourned proceedings in the case surrounding the death of two-year-old Wynne Akukue until May 26, 2026.
The toddler reportedly lost her life after a bookshelf allegedly collapsed on her while she was asleep at her school. Although the school management maintained that the incident was accidental, the family sought legal action, demanding justice over the child’s death.
Speaking after the court session, civil society activist, Comrade Chetam Nwala, who attended on behalf of civil society organisations, described the matter as one of significant public interest.
Nwala stated that unlike the previous hearing, all parties were present in court. However, the defence counsel informed the court that they had not been properly served with court documents, leading the court to instruct the state to ensure proper service.
He maintained that civil society groups would continue to follow the case closely to ensure justice is achieved.
Nwala further insisted that anyone found culpable should be held accountable, adding that parents should feel confident about the safety of their children in school environments.
Also addressing journalists, rights activist Charles Jaja urged the Rivers State Ministry of Education to become more actively involved in the matter and strengthen child safety measures in schools across the state.
Justice M.W. Danagogo later adjourned the matter to May 26, 2026, after both parties agreed on the new hearing date.
As you may know, the Rivers State Government has shut down the school temporarily following the incident.
