The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reserved judgment in two appeals filed by the Makinde-backed Turaki faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), challenging rulings that nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November last year.
A five-member panel of the court, led by Mohammed Garba, announced on Wednesday that a date for judgment would be communicated to counsel representing all parties.
The panel made the declaration after lawyers adopted their respective briefs and urged the court to grant their reliefs.
The first appeal, was filed by the PDP against the decision of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, which upheld the ruling of Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court. The judgment had barred the party from proceeding with its national convention without accommodating former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido.
The second appeal, was filed by the PDP, its National Working Committee (NWC), and National Executive Committee (NEC). It challenges the appellate court’s affirmation of an earlier ruling by James Omotosho, which restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring the Ibadan convention pending compliance with stipulated conditions.
The appellate rulings had effectively voided the outcome of the contested convention, deepening internal disputes within the party.
