Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who was abducted in Katsina State two weeks ago, has died while in captivity.
The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, June 13, attributing the retired military officer’s death to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his ordeal.
The state government expressed deep sadness over the incident, noting that sustained efforts by both the government and security agencies to secure his release were unsuccessful.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement read.
According to the government, the late General’s abduction and subsequent death constitute a significant loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation at large.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the bereaved family and Nigerians, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the security challenges facing the country and the need for stronger collaboration in addressing insecurity.
Major General Rabe was kidnapped on May 30 while travelling to Katsina alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, and their driver, Abdullahi Sa’idu. Their vehicle was reportedly ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of the state.
