The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has announced a special clean-up exercise around the Oil Mill Market and Eleme Flyover axis of Port Harcourt as part of activities marking World Clean-Up Day 2026.
The exercise, themed “From Clean Plates to Clean City,” will involve refuse evacuation beginning at 7am, followed by an awareness campaign at 10am.
According to the Agency, the intervention is in line with strategies outlined by its management team, led by the Managing Director, Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, to address waste management challenges at identified flashpoints across the city.
RIWAMA said the clean-up initiative would be extended to other areas of concern, including Ogbogoro-Egbelu, Rukpokwu and other strategic locations within Port Harcourt in the coming weeks.
The Agency has also urged residents, traders and business owners to comply strictly with approved waste disposal regulations to prevent the accumulation of refuse in unauthorised locations.
It reiterated that the approved period for refuse disposal remains 6pm to 10pm only, warning against indiscriminate dumping.
As part of the commemoration, RIWAMA says it will partner with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) and the Health and Environmental Youth (HEY) Initiative to conduct a citywide awareness campaign.
