Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the political relevance of former Transportation Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, insisting that his involvement in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects.
Wike made the remarks during a media chat on Thursday while responding to questions about the opposition coalition and reports linking Amaechi to a possible vice-presidential ticket on the ADC platform.
According to the FCT minister, the opposition lacks the unity and political strength required to unseat the ruling party, adding that no opposition coalition is presently positioned to wrest power from President Tinubu.
Drawing from past elections in Rivers State, Wike argued that Amaechi has failed to demonstrate electoral dominance despite his previous political offices.
“I resigned as a minister in 2014 to contest the governorship election and defeated his candidate,” Wike said.
He also recalled that despite Amaechi’s support for former President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 and 2019 elections, Buhari failed to secure up to 25 per cent of the votes in Rivers State.
Wike further noted that Amaechi backed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election, but Atiku also lost the state.
Wike maintained that holding prominent political positions does not automatically translate into electoral success, insisting that Amaechi lacks the political influence to deliver Rivers State in future elections.
