President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rangers International FC on winning the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title for a record ninth time.
The President praised the Enugu-based club for finishing the season at the top of the table with 68 points from 38 matches, ahead of runners-up Rivers United FC, describing their campaign as impressive and competitive.
Tinubu recalled the club’s historic dominance in Nigerian football during the 1970s and 1980s, highlighting their league and FA Cup successes, as well as their continental exploits in 1975, when they reached the final of the African Cup of Champions Clubs, and in 1977, when they won the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
He also commended Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for supporting youth and sports development, linking the club’s success to the state’s investment in sports infrastructure and talent nurturing.
“I must also congratulate Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on the victory of Rangers International FC. This victory is an obvious fruit of his administration’s investments in youth and sports in the state. I commend him,” the President said.
“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage. I am proud of their achievement,” he added.
President Tinubu also praised Rivers United for their strong performance throughout the season and their display of sportsmanship.
He wished both clubs success as they prepare to represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.
