The Port Harcourt Water Corporation (PHWC) has completed the construction phase of its 148 million litres-per-day water supply infrastructure designed to serve about 1.3 million residents in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas of Rivers State.
The Managing Director of PHWC, Chief Ibibio O. Walter, disclosed this in Port Harcourt during the inauguration of the WASH Media Network and WASH Media Capacity-Building Skills Training Workshop.
Walter said the project also includes approximately 456 kilometres of primary transmission and secondary distribution pipelines.
He said the completion of the major construction phase marked a significant step towards improving public water supply in the state, adding that the corporation had now shifted its focus to operationalisation and sustainable service delivery.
“Our priority is to ensure that these investments translate into reliable water services for households, businesses and communities,” he said.
According to him, comprehensive water quality testing had been undertaken, while the corporation was strengthening the capacity of its technical, operational and commercial teams.
He added that household connections and installation of customer water meters were ongoing across Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor.
Walter credited the Rivers State Government, African Development Bank, contractors, consultants and technical partners for their contributions to the implementation of the Urban Water Sector Reform and Port Harcourt Water Supply Scheme.
The event was attended by officials of the Port Harcourt Water Corporation, journalists and key stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector.
