A tragic incident occurred along the IKEINGHENBIRI–Ikebiri creek when a heavily loaded local wooden boat traveling from Azuzuama community in Southern Ijaw LGA to Yenagoa capsized.
Sources say three children lost their lives in the incident. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still unclear, but overloading and a failed pumping machine—which was used to evacuate water from the boat—are suspected to have caused the mishap.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1 a.m. this morning, leaving three children, who were already asleep, missing in the river.
The bodies of all the deceased children—two males and one female, aged between 6, 7, and 15 years—have been recovered by local divers and transported back to Azuzuama at the time of this report.
