The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) is set to host activities for the 2026 Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria Hypertension Society, including an inter-school debate and essay writing competition aimed at promoting health awareness among secondary school students.
RSUTH, under the leadership of its Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chizindu Alikor, announced that the competition is being organised in partnership with the Nigeria Hypertension Society as part of efforts to encourage youth engagement in addressing public health challenges, particularly hypertension among young Nigerians.
According to the organisers, the event is designed to promote critical thinking, effective communication, and awareness of healthy lifestyle choices among students from Rivers State and beyond.
The competition is scheduled to hold on Monday, June 22, 2026, by 11:00 a.m. at the Dental, Maxillofacial, Ophthalmology and ENT Complex of the RSUTH Annex in Garrison, Port Harcourt.
The essay competition will focus on the topic, “Hypertension in Young Nigerians: A Silent Epidemic — What Can We Do?” while participants in the debate contest will argue the motion, “Lifestyle Modification Is More Effective Than Drug Therapy in the Management of Hypertension.”
Organisers said the event will provide students with an opportunity to improve their public speaking and writing skills, interact with healthcare professionals and fellow students, and compete for prizes and certificates during one of Nigeria’s leading scientific health conferences.
They noted that the initiative reflects RSUTH’s commitment to community health education and youth development, adding that the hospital’s management remains dedicated to promoting preventive healthcare, public awareness and youth empowerment.
Interested participants and schools have been advised to contact Dr. Chineme Alfred on 08131893880 or Dr. Tomba Martyns-Yellowe on 08037003964 for registration and further enquiries.
The conference is themed around empowering young people to play active roles in promoting healthier lifestyles and building a healthier future for their communities.
