The Rivers State Police Command has ordered the arrest and detention of officers allegedly involved in the extortion of motorists following the circulation of a viral video and multiple complaints from members of the public.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborloo, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, said the command had taken note of the video and allegations linking ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers to acts of extortion while on duty.
According to the statement, the allegations arose from reports and social media posts accusing officers attached to the Old GRA Police Station in Port Harcourt of targeting motorists, particularly those driving vehicles with tinted windows, and demanding money despite the presentation of valid permits, including factory-fitted approvals.
Reacting to the allegations, the police command described the reported conduct as inconsistent with the ethical standards and professional values of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Rivers State Police Command views the allegations with utmost seriousness, as such conduct is inconsistent with the core values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement said.
The command further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the immediate arrest, detention and investigation of all officers implicated in the matter.
Adepoju reiterated that extortion, unlawful collection of money and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated under his watch, emphasizing the command’s commitment to accountability, respect for human rights and rebuilding public confidence in policing.
He assured residents that the investigation would be conducted transparently and impartially, adding that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law and the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act.
The police commissioner also urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of misconduct, corruption and abuse of office through designated complaint channels, assuring that the command remains committed to professionalism, discipline and quality service delivery across Rivers State.
