Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have rescued more than 47 persons, mostly women and children, who were held captive by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The rescue operation took place on June 20, 2026, following sustained military offensives against terrorist strongholds in the Lake Chad region.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the successful rescue was made possible by relentless ground and air operations carried out by OPHK troops, which forced the terrorists to abandon their positions.
“The unrelenting ground and air offensives forced the terrorists to abandon their positions in confusion, enabling the victims to escape from prolonged captivity,” the statement said.
The military disclosed that the rescued individuals are currently receiving medical attention at a secure location, while humanitarian support is being provided in collaboration with relevant agencies to facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Operation HADIN KAI said the development underscores its commitment to not only degrading terrorist capabilities but also securing the freedom of civilians held against their will by insurgent groups.
The Theatre Command reaffirmed its determination to sustain offensive operations against terrorist elements, dismantle remaining ISWAP networks, and restore lasting peace and normalcy across the North-East region.
