The Rivers State Government has restated its resolve to eliminate sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) against women, girls and vulnerable persons.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, gave the assurance in Port Harcourt during an advocacy visit by the Centre for Gender, Conflict and Development Studies, University of Port Harcourt, marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
He condemned increasing cases of rape, trafficking and domestic abuse, stressing that the Governor Siminalayi Fubara-led administration will strictly enforce the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and ensure offenders face justice.
Dr Anabraba urged parents, guardians and the public to promptly report any form of abuse, noting that the state has several agencies dedicated to protecting victims and supporting their welfare. He also pointed to ongoing empowerment efforts led by the Wife of the Governor, Lady Valerie Fubara.
Director of the Centre, Dr Adaku Ubelejit-Nte, said the global campaign aims to raise awareness and push reforms to curb violence against women and girls, adding that it calls for stronger coordinated actions in Rivers State.
