The Rivers State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, has inspected Community Secondary School, Rumuapara, following a trending video by a concerned resident highlighting the flooding, dilapidated condition of the school and the challenges faced by students and teachers.
The video showed portions of the school premises submerged by flood, drawing attention to the difficult conditions under which teaching and learning are taking place at the institution.
In response, the joint team, led by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Mina Tele Ikuru; and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Barr. Ishmael Tomonialadieokuma, visited the school for an on-the-spot assessment.
Directors and other officials from both ministries also participated in the inspection to assess the impact of the flooding on students, teachers, school infrastructure and teaching and learning activities.
Beyond the immediate flooding, the ministries said they would examine the drainage system and investigate the root causes of the recurring problem to ensure that any intervention provides a lasting solution.
A detailed report is being prepared to guide immediate, medium- and long-term measures to address the challenges identified at the school.
The Rivers State Government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring a safe and conducive learning environment at Community Secondary School, Rumuapara, while taking steps to protect the school from future flooding.
