Human rights activist, Chetam Nwala, has announced plans to stage a lone protest at the Rivers State Government House over the alleged failure of the Rivers State Governor to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
Speaking on the planned protest, Nwala said Rivers residents have become deeply divided along political and personal interests, as well as by various support groups. He explained that his decision to embark on a solo protest was driven by his desire to “liberate” the state and demand accountability from the government.
According to him, although the protest would begin as a lone demonstration, other residents who share similar concerns are free to join.
“I have decided to embark on a lone protest because Rivers State has to be liberated. Anybody who intends to join me is welcome, and if they choose not to, that is also fine. I only want to register my concerns and demand that the government does what is right,” he said.
The activist maintained that peaceful protest remains a constitutional right guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, stressing that no one has the authority to stop citizens from expressing their grievances lawfully.
Nwala further called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take responsibility for governance in the state, particularly regarding the presentation of the 2026 budget proposal.
He alleged that Rivers State had suffered setbacks in the past three years and warned voters against repeating what he described as past political mistakes during future elections.
The activist also urged Rivers residents and eligible voters to support leaders who would prioritise the welfare of the people, protect the economy, and govern in the interest of the state.
He added that citizens would use their votes to hold political leaders accountable in the next election cycle.
