The wife of a police inspector injured during Monday night’s attack on a police checkpoint along the Mbodo-Aluu axis of Obiri Ikwerre has appealed to the Rivers State Government and well-meaning Nigerians for financial assistance, saying the family needs about ₦1 million to fund his surgery and medication.
Speaking on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts programme with Sam Oracle, Cecilia Aleru said the family has already spent over ₦600,000 on the treatment of her husband, Inspector Godday Aleru, who is receiving care at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
Cecilia, a mother of four, including a one-month-old baby, said she was devastated when she learned that her husband had been shot during the attack. She explained that the family has exhausted its financial resources while trying to keep him alive.
She further alleged that, aside from the Divisional Police Officer of Aluu Division, who visited after she personally went to the station to seek assistance, no senior officer from her husband’s command, including the Commissioner of Police, has contacted or supported the family.
Responding to the claims, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command said the command was unaware of the officer’s situation. He advised Cecilia to continue working with the Divisional Police Officer to ensure the medical bills and other necessary support are addressed.
