The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation following a reported confrontation between a local vigilante group in Ipo Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area, and suspected bandits.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left the vigilante leader, identified as Ohahuru, missing and sparked tension within the community.
According to sources, Ohahuru had led members of the vigilante group on an operation into nearby bushes and forests after reports emerged of armed strangers in the area. The search team, operating under the Ipo Security Planning and Advisory Committee (ISPAC), reportedly encountered the suspected bandits during the mission.
A community member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the vigilante group, alongside some police officers, moved into the forest after farmers raised alarm over sighting armed individuals.
The source explained that the suspected bandits opened fire on the team during the encounter, leading to a gun battle. In the aftermath, Ohahuru was allegedly captured by the attackers and has not been seen since.
Search efforts are ongoing as security operatives work to locate the missing vigilante leader.
