The Rivers State House of Assembly has urged the state government to constitute a committee to recover all unaccounted funds allegedly in the possession of PAMO University of Medical Sciences and remit them into the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account.
The resolution followed the consideration of the report of the House Adhoc Committee investigating scholarship funds released to the university, during the Assembly’s 53rd Legislative Sitting on Friday.
According to a statement signed by Martins Wachukwu, Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker, the committee’s report indicated that PAMO University received more than N29 billion from the state government under the scholarship scheme.
The committee, however, raised concerns over discrepancies between the funds released and student enrolment figures.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, also faulted discrepancies in documents presented by the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education and the Office of the Accountant-General.
Amaewhule said that, based on the documents before the Assembly, of the more than N29 billion released to PAMO University, only about N5 billion was utilised.
He said the Assembly was determined to do the right thing irrespective of whose interest was affected, stressing that no individual could be bigger than the House as an institution empowered by the Constitution.
