The Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved to issue a warrant of arrest for the Vice Chancellor of PAMO University of Medical Sciences over his failure to appear before its Adhoc Committee investigating the disbursement of scholarship funds to the institution.
According to a statement signed by Martins Wachukwu, Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker of the House, the resolution was reached on Friday during the Assembly’s 53rd Legislative Sitting, following consideration of the report of the Adhoc Committee.
The report, presented by the committee’s Chairman, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, followed several invitations extended to the Vice Chancellor to appear before the committee and explain how funds released to the university under the scholarship scheme were utilised.
The committee said PAMO University received more than N29 billion from the Rivers State Government under the scholarship scheme, while raising concerns over discrepancies between the funds released and student enrolment figures.
Speaking on the report, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, said the government’s intention in entering into the scholarship agreement was good, but its implementation had raised concerns.
Amaewhule said the Assembly would continue to carry out its constitutional responsibilities, stressing that no individual could be bigger than the House as an institution empowered by the Constitution.
