A human rights lawyer, Chetam Nwala has accused the police of attempting to obstruct justice following the death of a two-year-old girl, Wynne Akekue, at the Eligbolo campus of Wisdom Gate School in Port Harcourt.
The matter came up for hearing at the Rivers State High Court on Tuesday, before Justice Monina Danagogo. However, proceedings were stalled as both the police, who are prosecuting the case, and representatives of the school failed to appear in court. The judge subsequently adjourned the case to May 12, 2026.
Speaking to journalists after the court session, lawyer and activist Chetam Nwala criticised the Rivers State Police Command for what he described as negligence and possible complicity. He expressed concern that despite filing the case and being aware of the hearing date, the police failed to show up or present any suspects in court.
Nwala questioned the commitment of the police to pursuing justice, alleging that their actions suggest an attempt to shield those responsible. He said the family of the deceased deserves accountability and warned against allowing influential individuals to evade responsibility.
He maintained that justice must be served and insisted that all those linked to the incident be brought before the court, stressing that failure to do so could encourage similar tragedies.
Wynne Akekue reportedly died in March after a shelf allegedly fell on her while she was asleep at the school. Her parents have accused both the school and the police of a cover-up, while rights groups continue to demand a thorough investigation and prosecution of those involved.
