The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Branch, has condemned the death of Miss Habibatu Favour Aruwa, a final-year law student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), and called for a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Tamunoibuemi Life-George, and Secretary, Okorite K. Yobo, the association expressed profound grief over the death of Aruwa, a dedicated member of the FIDA UNIPORT Chapter, whose life was cut short barely two months before her graduation.
FIDA described the circumstances surrounding her death, which was reportedly linked to her boyfriend in Delta State, as deeply disturbing, noting that the incident had thrown the legal community, the University of Port Harcourt and the FIDA family into mourning.
The association condemned all forms of violence against women and girls, stressing that no one should lose their life to violence under any circumstance.
According to the statement, the tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to tackle gender-based violence and safeguard the lives and dignity of women.
FIDA called on relevant law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation into the circumstances surrounding Aruwa’s death, insisting that all those found culpable must be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“Justice must neither be delayed nor denied,” the organisation stated.
The Rivers State branch of FIDA also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the Faculty of Law, University of Port Harcourt, the FIDA UNIPORT Chapter, her classmates, friends and loved ones, praying for strength and comfort for them in the face of the loss.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights of women and children, the association said it would continue to advocate against gender-based violence and femicide while promoting legal awareness and justice for victims.
