The Federal Government has announced a ₦250 million support package for the families of the 37 young men who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a condolence visit to the Niger State Government and the people of the state over the deaths.
Shettima described the incident as tragic, saying the Federal Government shared in the grief of the bereaved families and remained committed to protecting every Nigerian without discrimination.
He said the deaths were a matter of national concern, stressing that citizens deprived of their liberty remained entitled to the protection of the state regardless of any allegations against them.
The Vice President said the Federal Government owed the families justice and answers over the circumstances surrounding the deaths, adding that those responsible should be held accountable through due process.
While commiserating with the bereaved families, Shettima commended Niger State Governor Umaru Bago for his efforts to seek justice for the victims.
He, however, urged the people of the state not to politicise the tragedy or blame the governor, calling on citizens to remain fair and united as they mourn the victims.
