TEXT: MARK 14:1-11
MEMORY VERSE: “…a woman came in with an alabaster jar full of a very expensive perfume made of pure spikenard, she broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus head.” Mark 14:3
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
The extent of regard a man has for God sometimes determines the worth of worship, service and material things he gives to God. In our text, we see that a woman poured expensive oil on Jesus. The on-lookers who knew the cost of the oil lamented, as they saw it as a waste. But the woman had a high regard for Jesus, and used the best that she had to honour the Lord (vs. 1-3).
We must form the habit of putting God first in everything we do. In doing whatever we have to do in the name of God, we must have the character of making it lavish. Do not think about what else you would have achieved with the resources. Think about how big and worthy our God is (vs. 4-5).
God is pleased to see us lavish the best of what He has given us for His sake. In verse 6, Jesus said of what the woman did, “…she has done a fine and beautiful thing for me.” God does not fail to lavish His blessing on those who regard and honour Him with marvelous service and offerings (vs. 6-9).
But the expectations of those who join to make the work of God suffer setback will always be cut short. Judas Iscariot did not live to reap the fruit of his betrayal of Jesus Christ (vs. 1-2, 10-11).
Let us therefore be mindful of the role we play in the Church of God. Learn to support what will give God glory, and avoid what will bring pains and shame to the Church and true servants of God.
- What do you consider when you have to give something to the Church and God’s servants?
- Father, give me the spirit to sow bountifully, in Jesus Name. Amen.
