ESOCS Devotional 29 November
TEXT: JAMES 1:13–27 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22 KJV
The text emphasizes the difference between hearing and doing God’s word. The word of God is a good, and a perfect gift from God, which will enable a man not to err. From the text, hearing God’s word without doing it leads to deception. Jesus likened a hearer of the word to one who beholds his natural face in a glass and straightway forgets what manner of man he was. But a doer He likened to a man that looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in that which he has seen, not forgetting what he heard.
Doing the word is what helps to keep you away from temptation. It becomes difficult to be drawn away of your own lust and the enticement of the world. This will in turn prevent you from sinning against God, thereby making you an overcomer in Christ Jesus. It is therefore in your best interest to receive the engrafted word of God in your heart, which will help save your soul.
A doer of the word will be able to know how to bridle his tongue so as not to deceive his own heart. He will always obey God’s instructions by visiting the fatherless and widows in their times of challenges, and keep himself from the entanglements of the worlds. The reward for such a man is that he is blessed in his deed.
The foundation of a godly and blessed life is not just hearing God’s word, but doing it also.
