ESOCS Devotional 2 September 2026 – Distinguish Yourself

MEMORY VERSE: “Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm.” (Daniel 6: 3 NKJV).

TEXT: DANIEL 6: 1 – 14

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps, to be over the whole kingdom; 2 and over these, three governors, of whom Daniel was one, that the satraps might give account to them, so that the king would suffer no loss. 3 Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm. 4 So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.”

6 So these governors and satraps thronged before the king, and said thus to him: “King Darius, live forever! 7 All the governors of the kingdom, the administrators and satraps, the counselors and advisors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that whoever petitions any god or man for thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. 8 Now, O king, establish the decree and sign the writing, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not alter.” 9 Therefore King Darius signed the written decree.

10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.

11 Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12 And they went before the king, and spoke concerning the king’s decree: “Have you not signed a decree that every man who petitions any god or man within thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?”

The king answered and said, “The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not alter.”

13 So they answered and said before the king, “That Daniel, who is one of the captives from Judah, does not show due regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.”

14 And the king, when he heard these words, was greatly displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he [d]labored till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

The life of Daniel reminds us of the importance of living a life of faithfulness to our God even when no one is watching. It is impossible to distinguish yourself from the world without being a faithful follower of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In our text, King Darius preferred Daniel above the presidents and princes,” because an excellent spirit was in him” (Dan. 6:3). Daniel’s faithfulness to his God distinguished him from every other individual. He chose to walk in the law of God and he chose not to hide his love for fellowship and communion with The Father (Dan. 6:10) even when he knew his life was in danger.

This is an important lesson for all of us in life: any test we face is more complicated than we may be led to believe. When we face challenges, they are not simply the test before us, but the test of what is INSIDE of us – what our walk with God in life truly is. Daniel has indeed taught us that in the midst of challenges, God is watching to see if we will remain faithful to Him or be a disappointment to Him.

Many people seem to forget that external challenges have been approved by God to help us evaluate how true our walk is before Him. If we are not careful to be sensitive to obedience to God, we can easily learn in this life to “settle” for some level of dishonesty and this will certainly not help us to distinguish ourselves like Daniel.

The description of faithfulness was vivid: “no ground for accusation”, “no evidence of corruption”, “no negligence” wow! That description meant that Daniel was faithfully, diligently doing right. Daniel chose character over comfort. He chose pushing himself instead of being angry about what he didn’t have. That distinguished him – and it will distinguish you in life as well if you choose to be faithful to God. (Dan. 6: 4; 11 – 13).

The disciples walked with Jesus and were faithful till the end of their lives. They chose to lay down their lives that the gospel will prosper. They were not afraid of persecution. They chose to distinguish themselves in the face of challenges. No wonder they were called “Christians” because they behaved like Jesus (Acts 11:26).

It is our responsibility to live a life of faithfulness to our God, to distinguish ourselves from the world. We are in the world but not of the world. Let us set our affections on things above so that eternal crown will be our reward.

Challenges:

  • Are you living a life of faithfulness to God?
  • Does your character distinguish you from the people of the world?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help me to remain faithful unto You and to cling to that old rugged cross until my last breath.  Amen.
