TEXT: HEBREWS 13:16–25 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they must give account, that they may do it with joy and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13: 17 KJV
One of the ways by which you can become conditioned for the race and live a life transformed by the Gospel is to obey your leaders. The reason for obedience is because they keep watch over your souls. Godly and mature Christian leaders deserve respect and submission because they are concerned for your growth; and Jesus, the supreme Bishop of your soul, uses them to help you grow to maturity (I Pet. 2:25).
Submission is also necessary because it is for your well-being. It is a direct way of emulating the life of Jesus, which is a life of obedience and submission to God’s will and purpose. Christians are therefore called to do same. It is also necessary to be obedient and submissive so as to be protected from abuse of power, since the leaders will definitely give account of their stewardship for the souls under their care.
It is also important to be obedient and not to cause the leaders grief because it will be unprofitable for you. Obedience brings joy to the heart of the leaders. While in obedience, you have a duty to pray for them for grace to remain honest to the word of God, so that the God of peace will make you perfect in every good work: to His work and to His will (Hebrews 13:18, 20–21).
