TEXT: PSALM 128:1-6
MEMORY VERSE: “Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord; that walketh in His ways.” Psalm 128:1 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
One definition of fearing the Lord is walking in His commandments. Walking in His commandments means living your whole life according to His commandments. This means obedience, which has many benefits. So, because of his obedient way of life, blessing comes to the man, which is passed on to his family and his generations.
This Psalm is called a Psalm for families. The (godly) man is the head of the family. He leads his family in fearing the Lord. The godly woman will be fruitful and faithful in the home. Growing fruitful children will carry on the godly legacy of the home. Ultimately, personal and national well-being are the results of homes where God is feared.
We have three basic messages from this Psalm. Firstly, one is never truly happy until he is truly holy – the psalm began with a pronouncement of blessing/happiness, on a certain kind of man, a man who fears the Lord (verses 1-4). It concludes a prayer for blessing (verse 5-6). Secondly, the man has the power to transform his marriage and children by the choices he makes. Thirdly, the ingredients of happiness for a God-fearing man are: he eats the fruit of his labor, he has a fruitful wife and his children ever flourishing or prosperous in all things, protection and longevity with good health garnished with peace.
In his sermon, “A Godly Father’s Reward”, Dan Cale said, “If we fear the Lord and walk in His ways, our homes will be full of His blessings.” The whole duty of man is to fear God, and to keep
His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
- What is your understanding of fearing the Lord; self-righteousness?
- Ask God for guidance.
