TEXT: 2 KINGS 9:1-13
MEMORY VERSE: “And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD of Israel, I have anointed you king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel” (2 Kings 9:6 KJV).
Anointing is the divine sealing, authority, commissioning, and empowerment to in a position to fulfil God’s will and purpose.
Because it is divine, it carries God’s endorsement. Therefore, the anointed person is expected to do only the things that would give God praise, honour, and glory. He is to do all things to please God and no other person. Again, he is to work only the way God wants him to work; otherwise, his work or services may not be acceptable to God (Ps. 106:32-33). How is he to work? – only the way Jesus work while here on earth, and would work here now!
Jehu did right. God commended him (2 Kings 10:30). He brought to fulfilment God’s judgement on the house of Ahab of Israel for the blood of the prophets and innocent Naboth whom his wife Jezebel killed with impunity; and he cleansed most parts of Israel of idolatry. Yet, the same Jehu “… did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam … from the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan” (v 29).
Let us learn from Jehu’s experience. It doesn’t make sense to begin a good work or walk in the Christian life beautifully and end up badly; and be rejected by God. It doesn’t really make sense. Think about it.
- In your walk with God, endeavour not to end badly.
- Lord, I need your grace to live rightly and make heaven.
