ESOCS Devotional 20 April 2026 – Your Sorrow Will Turn Into Joy
MEMORY VERSE: “”Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.” John 16:20 NIV
TEXT: JOHN 16:16-END
“A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father.”
17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is saying.”
19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. 28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

In John 16:20, Jesus speaks these words to His disciples just before His arrest and crucifixion. He knew what was coming not only for himself but for them. Sorrow was inevitable. Grief was certain. But He also promised something greater things – “Your grief will turn to joy.”
This is not a shallow encouragement to smile through pain. It’s a powerful promise from the One who conquered death. Jesus wasn’t saying their sorrow would be replaced; He said it would be transformed. The same grief they felt watching Him die would become the foundation of their deepest joy when they saw Him alive again.
In life, sorrow often comes uninvited, through loss, disappointment, or suffering. But in Christ, sorrow never has the final word. God is in the business of turning sorrow into joy, ashes into beauty, mourning into dancing (Isaiah 61:3; Psalm 30:11).
When your heart aches, don’t give up. Hold on to the promise of Christ. Joy is coming, not by denying your sorrow, but by letting God redeem it.
Reflections
- What is causing sorrow or grief in your heart right now? Have you brought it honestly before God?
- Can you recall a time when God turned a painful experience into something that brought joy or growth?
- What does it mean to you that Jesus understands your sorrow and promises to transform it?
- How can you encourage someone else who is currently walking through a season of sorrow?
Action Step
Write down the area of sorrow you’re currently experiencing, and beside it, write a promise from God’s Word (like Romans 8:28, Psalm 126:5, or Revelation 21:4). Keep it somewhere visible as a reminder that your story is not over, joy is coming. Also, reach out to someone else who may be grieving and offer a word of encouragement or a prayer.
Prayer
- Jesus, you see my sorrow, and you understand it. Thank you for the promise that it will not last forever.
- Teach me to trust that you are working even in the pain.
- Help me to wait with hope and to look forward with faith. Turn my mourning into dancing and let my life reflect the joy that comes from you alone, in your name. Amen.
