TEXT: JOHN 6:1-14
MEMORY VERSE: “But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him” (1 Kings 12:8 KJV).
Every day we make choices and take decisions, which accumulate into the life we live at any point in time. There comes in everyone’s life a moment where matters become critical, and there is a great demand for decision making. Sometimes, people resort to seeking counsel from others in order to make right decisions. In this light, it is important we seek counsel with wisdom; and from the right source.
There are three notable errors in the decision making of the young King Rehoboam.
He did not consult God in his decision-making process. But it is important we seek to know God’s will in any matter of significance. His will is best for us. David understood this and always inquired of God in all matters. His men were to stone him in 2 Samuel 30; but he desired to know God’s will before he made any decision. People who do always get it right. If we exclude God from our circumstances, we would face them all alone. Such is not good for us.
He despised wise counsel. Failure and catastrophe await anyone that delights in scorning wise counsel.
He kept the wrong kind of friends. Christian friends and colleagues are best because they are led by the Holy Spirit. They possess godly attitude that helps in giving wise counsel.
Let us learn to make friends with Jesus first (John 15:15), and then with the right kind of people; and we would never make fatal mistakes like Rehoboam.
- God’s will and wise counsel are what we actually need.
- Lord, give me the heart to always seek and follow your leading.
