TEXT: EXODUS 14:5-31
MEMORY VERSE: ““And Moses said unto the people, fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will shew to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever.” Exodus 14:13 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
There is this popular saying that “when the going gets tough, only the tough get going” With reference to believers, when the times are tough, the true character of faithful believers are manifested. Such was the situation of the children of Israel at the Exodus. In their weak faith, this whole nation complained against Moses for delivering them to a point of what seemed to be certain death (vs. 11). The people were ignorant that it was God’s plan to lead them to anopportunity where they had to trust totally in Him, when all hope seemed lost.
Likewise, in order to strengthen our faith, God leads or allows us to wander to a point where we have no choice than to totally trust in Him. Israel had lived a dependent life in Egypt for over four centuries. Yes, they had some degree of faith in God. But at this point, God wanted them to develop the level of faith they needed to build their own nation asfree and independent people. We thus see the trap in which they found themselves at this time. This was a faith buildingopportunity for a people that had no experience of nationhood.
In Mark 4:39, Jesus arose from a deep sleep to rebuke a windy storm, which threatened the life of His disciples. The wind ceased at His rebuke, to their greatest amazement. Many believers confess faith in God only verbally. But when put under test, they falter. In Luke 17:6, Jesus cautioned that people need to grow in faith, even as little as mustard seed, in order to be able to do great exploits.
Child of God, in times of trial, fear not, only trust God to the full, and victory is assured.
- Consider yourself in the position of the Hebrew people. In between the Red Sea and the Egyptian war chariots andhorses, would you have acted in a different way? Pray God to help you increase in faith.
- O God, when the goings get tough, when all hope seem lost, please stand by me always.
