TEXT: LUKE 13:1-17
MEMORY VERSE: “I tell you, Nay: but except ye repent, ye shall likewise perish.” Luke 13:3 KJV
Repentance is not merely sorrow for sin. There are many who weep over sin without repentance but immediately return to the same sin. Remorse and tears often accompany repentance, but they are not repentance in themselves. Repentance is a change of heart and mind that leads to change of conduct.
Repentance is a very prominent subject in the Bible, so much so that it was mentioned over one hundred times. It was the theme of John the Baptist’s preaching. Jesus also told His listeners to “repent or perish”.
It is the earnest desire of God to ensure that no one perishes that He sent His only Son to die for our sins, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. As Christians, we are enjoined to repent of all the sins committed and be saved by our Lord and Saviour.
Repentance attracts God’s mercy as shown in the Holy Scriptures; that we, therefore, return unto our God, for His mercies endure forever.
Therefore, as ministers of God, we should bring people to the consciousness of their sins and lead them back to God in true repentance.
