TEXT: 1 JOHN 1:1-10 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 KJV
The word ‘fellowship’ here is in reference to joint-partnership and sharing in the common bond of having obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ (v 3). The truth that John writes is the foundation upon which this fellowship is acquired and maintained. It follows therefore that unless one believes in the truth of the gospel, he can have no fellowship with the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, as well as the brethren (John 17:1-3; 1 Cor. 1:9; 2 John 1:9-10). Such a person is therefore not walking in the light of God.
Fellowship is a rich and vibrant concept in the scriptures that speaks to the human need to share life with the giver of life (God), and with other human beings (brethren). Sin broke the original fellowship arrangement with God, as Adam and Eve tried to hide from God, following their disobedience (Gen. 3:8). Yet, even throughout the Old Testament, God continued with this grace-filled promise: “I will be with you.” The coming of Jesus in human flesh (God with us), has resulted in even closer fellowship with the Creator and author of life. We can now have fellowship with God as Father, as Son, and as Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:15).
The bonds that link us to Jesus also tie us to one another in fellowship. Thus, fellowship is described and proclaimed in the teachings of the apostles, exemplified in the early church and symbolized in the Lord’s Supper. It is therefore expected that Christians should nurture fellowship by following the “One Another” command in the Bible.
