ESOCS Devotional 10 December
TEXT: PROVERBS 9:1-9 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2 KJV
In our text today, we notice a sharp contrast between wisdom and folly or foolishness (vs. 1-6). Here, both wisdom and folly are figuratively personified as they extend their invitations to those who seek either a righteous or a wicked way of life, albeit with their attendant and diverse consequences, even as referenced in our memory verse above. In this context, the picture of wisdom is painted as a hostess who makes her appeal to those who seek to be prudent. Her house is strongly built, and her table well dressed – with wine mixed with well-blended spices. Everything has been well arranged to attract willing guests into the dwelling place of wisdom.
Objectively, wisdom attempts to shape wholesome attitudes by fostering positive ones and warning against negative ones. Generally, wisdom encourages her adherents to develop the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), and to shun the works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21). The teachings of wisdom are in concurrence with the counsel of St. Paul to the Ephesians church, thus: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Eph. 4:29). But folly will teach otherwise (Prov. 7:7-21).
Brethren, let’s toe the path of wisdom and live to reign with our Saviour and Lord.
