ESOCS Devotional 10 September 2026 – Faith Comes By Hearing The Word
MEMORY VERSE: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Matt. 10:17 KJV).
TEXT: ROMANS: 10:16 – 21
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18 But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed:
“Their sound has gone out to all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the world.”
19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says:
“I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation,
I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.”
20 But Isaiah is very bold and says:
“I was found by those who did not seek Me;
I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”
21 But to Israel he says:
“All day long I have stretched out My hands
To a disobedient and contrary people.”

Faith is an important aspect of our lives which helps us to receive all that we have been promised of by God. The bible defines it as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). By faith great men of God obtained good report and we were made to understand that the world itself was framed by the word of God through faith (Heb. 11:2-3). It is practically impossible to please God without faith because you need to believe that He is and rewards all those who serve Him diligently (Heb. 11:6).
Faith comes in many forms, but the best way to acquire this invisible spiritual thing is to hear and believe the word of God. It’s a very simple concept, but it can be difficult to grasp if we allow ‘seeing to believe reality’ rules. The Word of God is the most magnificent propeller of faith. Initially, we understand and strongly have faith in God because we found that living truth from the word of God. So, the word of God is still the foundation of all faith. I can only pray because the Word says everything I ask, God hears, and He would do it. “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” (Jeremiah 29:12).
So, how do we obtain faith? “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17). The truth is that unless we give ourselves to constantly hearing the word of God that our faith in Him will grow. We must continue to “desire the sincere milk of the word of God that we may grow thereby” (I Pet. 2:2).
Moreover, once you have the Word of God in you, never hide it; keep using and exercising it. When challenges come, let the Word of God guide your faith. When you are sick, speak the word, say “with His stripes, I am healed” (paraphrased: Isaiah 53:5). When you need God, arise and pray because “whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” (Matthew 21:22). When you need God’s provision, Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. This is our inheritance in Christ, don’t doubt it, and don’t waste it.
One important thing that I want to emphasize is this: not only does faith come by hearing, but unbelief comes by hearing, too. Paul says this in 2 Timothy 2:16–18, where he is advising Timothy about how to lead a successful Christian life. if you want to keep your faith, you should not listen to godless chatter. If you go on hearing it, it will enter into your heart and mind and will eat away your faith just like a cancer eats away sound flesh. Cultivate, instead, the practice of right hearing, in both what you hear and how you hear. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.
May your faith be stirred today in the reading of Scripture. May the pages of God’s word guide you to a lifestyle of trust, hope, and surrender. And may you experience the joy of living by faith in response to your God’s amazing acts of faithfulness.
