The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned recent remarks by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against opposition parties, describing the comments as self-serving and insensitive to the hardship currently faced by Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said it was ironic for President Tinubu to accuse opposition leaders of lacking vision when, according to the party, his administration has presided over one of the most difficult periods in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The reaction followed President Tinubu’s acceptance speech after emerging as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general election, where he reportedly stated that opposition leaders would take Nigeria backwards because they lacked alternative ideas and direction.
Responding, the ADC said the country was currently battling severe economic hardship, rising insecurity, inflation, and worsening poverty under the present administration.
According to the party, millions of Nigerians are struggling with soaring food prices, collapsing businesses, and widespread insecurity, while many farming communities remain unsafe due to banditry and violent attacks.
The party argued that if the opposition intended to “take the country backwards,” it would only be to rescue Nigeria from what it described as the dangerous path created by the current administration.
The ADC also expressed concern over the outcome of the APC presidential primary, which allegedly produced 10.99 million votes for President Tinubu, describing the figure as unbelievable and warning that it could signal plans to manipulate the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party further accused the Federal Government of failing to address worsening economic and security challenges across the country, insisting that Nigerians were more concerned about hunger, inflation, poverty, and insecurity than political rhetoric.
The statement added that citizens were demanding answers on why food had become unaffordable, businesses were shutting down, and insecurity continued to spread despite repeated promises of economic reforms and national recovery.
