Rivers United Football Club has confirmed that its team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for its President Federation Cup Round of 16 match against Nasarawa United.
According to a statement issued by the club’s Media Officer, Charles Mayuku, the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from the club’s camp.
The club said some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the incident but noted that there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
“All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement said.
Rivers United stated that the safety, health, and well-being of its players and officials remain its top priority, adding that the club’s medical team is closely monitoring those involved while management assesses the situation and makes necessary arrangements.
The club also expressed appreciation to supporters, partners, and members of the football community for their concern, prayers, and support following the incident.
Rivers United said further updates on the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup fixture against Nasarawa United will be communicated in due course.
