No fewer than 23 inmates have been released from correctional centres in Rivers State following a jail delivery exercise aimed at reducing congestion in custodial facilities across the state.
Of the total number, 18 inmates were freed from the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, while five others regained their freedom from the Ahoada Correctional Centre after magistrates reviewed their cases.
The Chief Registrar of the Rivers State Judiciary, David Ihua-Maduenyi, disclosed this in a statement dated July 24, 2026, stating that the exercise was carried out on July 22.
According to the statement made available to journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, the initiative formed part of ongoing efforts to ease overcrowding in correctional facilities across the state.
