The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, has urged the public to recognise stroke warning signs and seek immediate medical attention, stressing that every minute counts in saving lives.
Public Relations Officer of the NMA, Duukori Thankgod in a statement said the Chairman of the association, Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, made the call as the NMA joined the global community to commemorate World Stroke Day on October 29, 2026, under the theme, “Every Minute Counts — #ActFAST #BeFAST.”
The association identified facial drooping, arm weakness and slurred speech as major warning signs of stroke, urging people to seek emergency medical care immediately when such symptoms occur.
It also advised the public to reduce their risk of stroke by controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes, eating healthily, engaging in regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco.
The NMA Rivers State Branch noted that early recognition and prompt medical attention could save lives, preserve brain function and reduce long-term disability.
It urged the public to remember the FAST approach: Face, Arms, Speech and Time, emphasising that immediate action is crucial whenever stroke symptoms are noticed.
