Abuja – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has downplayed concerns over impeachment proceedings, stating that it is a constitutional process and not a criminal offence. Speaking on the matter, Wike dismissed fears that impeachment could lead to instability, calling such claims “rubbish and nonsense.”
He criticized the notion that only certain groups, particularly the Ijaw people, have the capacity to sabotage pipelines, arguing that no ethnic group has a monopoly on such acts. “Who told you Ogoni, Ikwerre, or Ekpeye people cannot blow up pipelines?” he asked, questioning why threats of violence should be tolerated in national discourse.
Wike further condemned the trend of using threats of pipeline destruction as leverage for political appointments, particularly in agencies like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He accused some government officials of enabling these threats for political gain.
Referring to reports that militant groups could react violently if a sitting president adheres to court rulings, Wike dismissed such threats outright. “Let the whole country be blown up? Enough is enough! You don’t tell anybody that,” he asserted.
His comments come amid heightened political tensions, with debates surrounding governance, resource control, and security in the Niger Delta.
