Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as British Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing an unexpected end to a premiership that began with a landslide election victory in July 2024. The announcement comes less than two years after he led Labour back into government following more than a decade in opposition.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer defended his record in office, saying every decision he made was guided by what he believed was best for the country. He also pointed to his efforts to rebuild the Labour Party, including tackling anti-Semitism and restoring confidence in the party’s economic and national security agenda.
His departure has fueled speculation over who will succeed him, with attention increasingly focused on Andy Burnham following his recent Makerfield by-election victory. Party insiders reportedly view Burnham as the leading candidate, with discussions underway about a possible uncontested transition that could see a new prime minister in place before Labour’s annual conference in September.
