The Rivers State Police Command says it has arrested a middle-aged woman, Victoria Christopher invovled in the sale of her two-weeks-old grandchild. Victoria allegedly sold the newborn for N1.4 million to child traffickers in Owerri, Imo state.
Mother of the child, Mrs. Anthonia Christopher in a chat with journalists after the arrest of her mother said she took her to Owerri to deliver her baby and connived with the midwives to sell the baby after delivery.
Anthonia said the mother had told her that she wanted to sell the baby because the husband was yet to pay her bride price and threatened to kill her if she revealed the plan.
Christain Duru, father of the baby in his reaction commended the Rivers State Police Command for rescuing his baby.
He said he was happy when the Police called him to come get his baby. He noted that the mother-in-law had told him that the baby was dead.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP. Nnamdi Omoni who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was arrested at Imo state by officers of the Trans-Amadi Police Division.
