The Managing Director of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Ibimina Wokoma, has praised Siminalayi Fubara for securing new dumpsites aimed at addressing long-standing waste management challenges in the state.
Dr. Wokoma said the newly secured dumpsite is now operational and is being managed in an environmentally friendly manner to reduce odor and limit environmental impact on nearby residents.
According to him, measures have been introduced to control stench and ensure the facility complies with basic environmental standards.
RIWAMA explained that the new development has significantly improved waste evacuation operations across Rivers State, particularly in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor.
The agency noted that the construction of an almost two-kilometre concrete access road into the dumpsite has enhanced the movement of waste evacuation trucks, especially during the rainy season.
It added that the improved access road has reduced truck turnaround time, increased the volume of waste evacuated daily, and eased pressure on waste collection points within the city.
RIWAMA further stated that the initiative aligns with the broader plan of the Rivers State Government to restore Port Harcourt’s Garden City status through improved waste management infrastructure.
The agency also disclosed that Governor Fubara acquired a second dumpsite along the Iriebe/Elelewon axis to further strengthen waste disposal operations in the state.
RIWAMA assured residents that it would continue scaling up operations at the facilities while maintaining environmentally friendly standards aimed at fully restoring the Garden City status of Port Harcourt.
