Port Harcourt — The Rivers State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against vandalism with the arrest of two suspects involved in the theft and destruction of NDDC street solar lights.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, officers from the Trans-Amadi Division acted on credible intelligence and apprehended the suspects around 3:00 a.m. on January 26, 2025, along Danjuma Drive, off Trans-Amadi Road in Port Harcourt.
The suspects, identified as Shaibu Yusuf, 30, from Bolari Town in Gombe State, and Ibrahim Abubakar, 28, from Katsina State, both residing at Okuru Scrap Dump in the Abuloma Community, were caught in the act of vandalizing and attempting to steal the solar lights.
Recovered from the suspects were solar light poles, panels, bolts, nuts, and a knife. The duo reportedly confessed to being part of a syndicate responsible for stealing street solar lights and manhole covers in the area.
The suspects have since been charged to court, while efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the criminal group.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to curbing vandalism and theft in the state, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
