A resident of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, identified as Dikachi, has called on the state government to with immediate effect seal up manholes in the city as some persons now use them as dump sites.
Dikachi, who resides at Anozie street by Ikwerre road, made this known in a chat with our correspondent, who had visited some major roads yesterday, to confirm if the government had fulfilled its promise of sealing up open manholes in the city.
Dikachi, noted that the manholes have also inflicted severe injuries to passersby who unknowingly fall inside at nights.
He recalled that a forthnight ago, a man was rescued and rushed to the hospital, after he fell inside one of the holes almost filled with refuse in the area.
He also said they have started experiencing flood in the area, whenever it rains, as there are no routes for water to pass anymore.
He pleaded with the relevant agencies to act by ensuring that the holes are covered for the safety of residents of the area.
Recall that the Mayor of Port Harcourt, Hon. Allwell Ihunda had in a statement few months ago, said over 350 manhole covers were stolen by hoodlums in the city.
Ihunda, had promised that the government would replace the iron covers with concrete.
However, our correspondent reported that few weeks after, the government was yet to fulfill its promise.
