The Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board has raised the alarm over a reported increase in diphtheria cases across several states, urging residents to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention when symptoms appear.

The board, in a public health advisory, said early detection and prompt action could help prevent complications and save lives.

It listed high fever, severe sore throat, persistent cough, catarrh and flu-like symptoms among the warning signs residents should watch for.

The board advised anyone experiencing such symptoms, or those who notice them in people around them, to report immediately to the nearest health facility for proper assessment and treatment.

It also urged residents to maintain good hygiene by covering their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and washing their hands regularly.

The board further stressed the importance of childhood immunisation, urging parents and caregivers to ensure that their children receive all routine vaccines provided under Nigeria’s free Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) schedule.

According to the board, vaccination remains the strongest protection against diphtheria and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

It encouraged residents to share the health advisory within their families and communities to promote awareness and help protect vulnerable people.
